생선살 혹은 생선 한 마리를 통째로 튀김옷 입혀 기름에 튀긴 것에 감자튀김을 곁들여 내는 피시앤드칩스(fish and chips)는 영국의 국민 음식으로 잘 알려져 있다. 음식에 관해선 할 얘기가 별로 없는 영국이지만 이 단순한 요리는 영연방 국가를 중심으로 세계적으로 유명한 음식에 속한다.
주로 대구와 넙치 등의 생선을 쓰지만 생선 종류가 제한된 것은 아니다. 명태나 메기 같은 생선이 쓰이기도 하고, 지역에 따라 아귀나 열대 생선 같은 것도 사용되는 레시피가 단순한 요리다.
